Getting ready to start my cj7 build

    Hey guys new to the Jeep game I’m moving on from drag racing. I just purchased a 1985 CJ7 that is mostly stock except for a shackle lift and 35’s.

    This is the list of things I’m thinking of doing chime in if something is not possible.

    I’m wanting to put 40” tires with an appropriate lift ? It’s just going to be a beach cruiser bar hopper on concrete I’m thinking of upgrading the stock axels and changing the gearing for the tire size. Drum to disc for the rear. Motor and trans later I’m digging the 258 right now. So what’s the best lift for these and which is better under or over the axel, and how much lift for 40” tires.

    IMO moving up to 40s is going to be your biggest expense as no stock jeep axle will last long rolling them big ones. That 258 is a good low end torquer who will become anemic running them 40s. Enjoy the ride and share a pic or 2 before the transformation.

    Fuel Injection, Dana 44s, T18, 4.10s w/lockers
    I have seen too many attempts at installing a huge tire on a CJ as the stock axle just cannot take to load. The brake system and clutch cannot take it either. I would suggest no larger than a 33" tire With aluminum wheels. AMC recommends no larger than a 31" tire. When you install a lift on a CJ you have to consider the effect on the rest of the complete driveline also.

    I plan on upgrading the stock axels and gearing to accommodate the larger tires. Example a stock ford 9” is good for maybe 400 hp. After upgrading the axels and third member it’s good for 1500+ hp. It’s never going to see mud or trail riding and probably never go over 55 mph.
