Just bought a 90 YJ in good shape with many upgrades. The engine has 118000. Seller mentioned these engines are noisy and that is common. Some clacking. Jeep runs great. Is this common and if so, anything to worry about?

118k is not that bad for an engine with a good history. If you have this "Clacking" it could be a stuck hydraulic lifter. There are numerous additives that you can use in your oil that can clean it out. I like Rislone as it has solved previous issues. I would also recommend Shell Rotella oil in the 15w-40 as it has great detergent qualities. Some say it is for diesel engines only, it is not. I have been using it for years and it keeps my engines quite clean. The slightly heavier oil works great for the older 258 and will increase the oil pressure. this can be noted best with a mechanical oil gauge.

I have 2 1990s worst thing they have plastic timing gears if its got a noise. Been there twice, you have to pull the pan and the tiiming cover .Do yourself a favor when the pan is off put in new rod and main bearinngs they are cheap and without saying. New main seal and oil pump ,the bearings and seal are 2 peice and you use the new one to push the old one around
