I am getting ready to start my build and am getting mixed reviews, I have a 1985 CJ7 and want to run 46 Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. I am building this jeep to just cruise around 45 mph around 25 miles from ocean springs to Bay st louis, MS. I have stock axles and I know they will have to be beefed up or changed but what is your recommendation for axles? I also have the straight 6 and currently running 35's just fine. I am just searching for information and opinions.

Technically the Jeep CJ is not designed for anything over the size of tire that it came with. I am sure you have noticed a reduced braking capability, reduced power, inaccurate speedometer, automatic transmission overheating or excessive wear on a manual transmission clutch, and tire clearance issues. All of these issues can be solved correctly with enough money spent that you will never get back.

Beefed up 1 tons and a V8, or Rockwell 2.5 tons with 6.72 gear ratio for the I-6.

My CJ has a 103 to 1 first gear ratio and I go real easy on the pedal when in that gear. I had an aircraft stress engineer calculate what diameter axles I would need to handle that kind of torque. It was calculated to require a 2" diameter.

You can also check the rear cover shape online to confirm.
