My cherokee is at 174k approximately, it shifts fine runs good, the guy who had it before me said it was in his family most of it’s lifetime and he had been taking care of it, my question is should I trust that he had been doing transmission changes through it’s lifetime and I should trust to do it again or should I trust that changing it might ruin my transmission being so old, I’ve heard that when they get to high mileage changing the transmission fluid can lead to the transmission falling apart due to it being worn out or the guy didn’t take care of it

IMO a drain and fill should be beneficial as opposed to a flush. I would replace the filter too.

My question is more if a should I do it, I just don’t know because I’ve heard it can reveal a problem with the transmission not there before

If the fluid is no longer bright ruby red and now burnt darker change it. Especially if it has not been done or no record of it being done. That’s my two cents.

aggrex has it right. Although removing the pan can allow you to inspect the condition of the heavier stuff in the fluid though like looking for metal chips. I always like to install a magnet wherever I can like in the plugs for the diffs, oil pan. and transmission pan. Changing all the fluids allow you to make a new start and always record what you do. There is nothing wrong with keeping maintenance records.

You can drain the pan(I think its a 14mm bolt) and replace the fluid(about 4 quarts) drive 200 miles and drain again and then drive 200 more miles and check color of your fluid. Use dex merc trans fluid. you can get it at Wally World.
