    Hello all,

New CJ 5 owner and forum member here.

So, I drove my new CJ around all day (first day owning it), and I started hearing a loud whining noise. It sounded like a belt so I drove it home. Upon inspection, the top alternator bolt had sheared off and I’m going to attempt extraction tomorrow. My question is, it looks like rather than being a bolt, it’s actually threaded rod. I don’t know how far it threads into the sleeves or the block. And I’m not sure if I can just remove the sleeves and make it easier to extract. I’m also thinking that because it’s not a bolt, is the reason it broke. Any thoughts?

Time for some drilling and/or ez out etc to get the remnants of that bolt out

Yes, that’s the plan. I was wondering if those sleeves (or whatever they’re called) could be removed...the three sections going to the block. Maybe I won’t have to drill. The other concern is what caused it to snap. I was able to recover the rest of the bolt. Turns out it was sitting in the road exactly where I started hearing the whining. It’s actually threaded rod, not exactly a bolt. I’m assuming that’s not strong enough, and hoping that was the problem.

When working on older vehicles broken bolts or threaded rods is common and they can break for multiple reasons ranging from over-tightening or under, fatigue, vibration, rust etc.

I’m not exactly sure. It’s grey raptor liner.
