Good morning... This is my 1st post here.
When attempting to back up with the driver door open, my Grand Cherokee will not move. THIS IS GOOD.
Is there any setting anywhere that would provide this same type of safety when the liftgate is open?

When I push the button inside the cargo area, for the lift gate to close... even though I press the button fully it doesn't always activate the closure. As a result I have brushed against my open garage door with my open liftgate twice and scratched the paint. The second time this happened it actually tweaked my liftgate. It does close, but now it doesn't line up and it's in the body shop, since it now leaks.
    TIA

Install a rear view camera and if the image is not right immediately stop the vehicle or train yourself not to move the vehicle until all doors are closed. The damage estimates from the body shop should be a good reminder as the next time could be a small animal or person in the path of the moving vehicle.

I don't believe that the lift gate is tied to the transmission reverse like the drivers door is. Made that way so you can leave the 2x4's or christmas tree sticking out and still back up. Can't find any settings to change that in my scanner either.
It has an anti-pinch feature to keep from closing your head in it. Will sound horn and flash lights when opening/closing.
Best your going to get is the "rear gate open" light in the instrument cluster.

    aggrex,
I have a "backup camera", as most 2019s do... (I think) , but to be honest... I've never looked at it with the liftgate UP. I'll check it out tomorrow. THX.
I think I just need to SLOW DOWN. I've rubbed against the garage door twice now, but also threw my pickleball stuff in the back the other day... quickly pressed the CLOSE GATE button, (inside the cargo area) and hopped into the driver's seat. I backed up and got about 1/2 a block before I realized the liftgate was still up.

My Dad had a bad habit of driving with the parking brake on. He wired up a beeper to sound whenever the parking brake was engaged. Perhaps you can wire up a device to sound or flash when the lift gate is left open or ajar

Might not be a bad idea. Don't want to void my warranty though. Anymore I'm paranoid just backing up in a parking lot.

I still wish there was a way to automatically prevent the Jeep from backing up with the liftgate open, but I guess I could get in the habit of watching my backup camera on the dash. If I see the license plate... I'm good to go. :burnrubber:
