AX-5 Transmission

    I have heard that the AX-5 transmission is basically junk !! Is that with oversize tires or just in general ???

    87 Wrangler, kind of...
    5.7 V8 with Whipple Supercharger, TH350 w/B&M Shifter, NP205 TC, Dana 60 front 4.56, GM 14 bolt 10.5 rear 4.56, 4 wheel discs, Bilstein shocks, 6" lift on 37's, Autometer gauges, all led lighting and a few other things.
    AX-5 was a pretty light duty transmission. OK for a stock 2.5 cid 4 cyl engine used for commuting. Not strong enough for higher displacement engines, bigger tires or any real off-roading.
    Brass syncros is potentially damaged with long term use of any gl-5 gear lube containing sulfur.
    Problems also occurred too often with the 5th gear snap ring.

    Thank you Groundfault. And from your response, I have to guess that mileage enters the equation also !!!
