My daughter was driving me 05 Cherokee. It's been running fine. Fuel tank got to 10 miles till E. She put gas in it and sat at the pump 10min (Jeep running) and left. Almost instantly it shudder a couple times. Then lost power gas pedal was pushed all the way down and Jeep was barely moving. Then check engine light started flashing she pulled in a parking lot and turned the jeep off. Wouldn't start so it was towed home. My ex-husband came over and ran the code and there was only one code and it was 171. I've been told dirt might have gotten sucked up into it. I've also been told the fuel pump probably needs replaced. You can hear the fuel pump kick on and it squirts fuel out but someone told me that just because it's doing that it doesn't mean that it is getting the amount of pressure needed to run. I need help guys from somebody that knows what they're talking about because I'm a single female and I can't afford to put it in the shop and I can't afford to keep buying parts and playing the guessing game. So if anybody has any ideas or anything I can try please let me know. Thank you.

Hope you've found a solution already. Possible the fuel pump picked up some dirt in the bottom of the tank when it was running on empty. Could be a clogged fuel filter.
Could also be a vacuum leak, bad mass air flow sensor or faulty front O2 sensor.
Don't know what model/engine you have. Some have the fuel filter in tank, other's have fuel filter on the drivers side underneath the vehicle , on the inner side of the unibody frame near the fuel tank. If you have the external filter, I'd recommend changing it first since it's inexpensive and pretty easy to change.
If you change the filter and it doesn't help or the filter is in the gas tank, your best bet is to take it to someone for a diagnostic scan to check for faulty sensors, and they can also check the fuel pump flow and pressure.
Hope it's an easy fix. Let us know what you find.
