Synthetic oil

Hi! I have a 2014 GC 4X4 (80k miles) and have always used conventional oil, changing every 5000 miles. I work from home so don't drive a lot but its mostly suburban, occasional highway, rare long trip. I recently went to my locally owned auto place to have the oil changed and they didn't have conventional oil! I know next to nothing about synthetic so I held off on the oil service. Is it worth the switch (I know its 2-4 times as $$)? If I switch to synthetic do I have to stick with it forever? I know it has a longer service time and there are benefits especially with city driving but I love my Jeep and I don't want to do something stupid just because of supply issues. Any thoughts or advice out there? Thank you in advance for your time and thoughts!

 

Switching to synthetic oils should not be a problem on your Jeep. Synthetic oils have some benefits over conventional oils such as easier starts on frigid mornings, protection against high temperature breakdown, longer OCI and potentially better mpg. Make sure they use a good oil filter, synthetic brand and correct weight rating. Based on your current use you should be able to change once a year.

p.s.: switched to synthetic oil on my daughter's '97 Avalon with 93K currently 190K

 

Many of the newer vehicles require synthetic oil and I would not worry about using it instead of the older regular oil. If you expect to go on long trips or to be in the middle of nowhere with the Jeep I would buy an extra quart to carry with me in case you need to add oil before your next oil change as I understand you should not mix synthetic and non-synthetic oils in an engine.

I’d stick with OEM oil recommendations and pickup synthetic oils for a great price at the local Walmart….dash in and dash out . Synthetic oils have some significant advantages like longer OCI, extreme heat tolerance and better flow at lower temps etc.
