I have no current plans to tow a trailer with my 2 door JL but I wondered about the towing capacity. I thought it would be simple - 4 cylinder would have a lower towing capacity than a 6 cylinder - but that is not how it apparently works. See the screenshot from the manual.

The 2 door, both 4 and 6 cylinder, have a 2000 pound towing capacity and the 4 door, both 4 and 6 cylinder, have a 3500 pound towing capacity. Can someone explain to me why that is? Is it due to the frame? or different gearing in the transmission? Or the higher weight of the 4 door? I just don't see what it might be.

    Thanks.

Biggest limitation is the shorter wheelbase. Towing at the limits or slightly over may feel okay initially but there is very little reserve capacity for handling/braking/swerving. Instead of typical frame mounted hitches check out the JK/JL hitch mount on the rear crossmember it does look a bit sketchy. IMO stick with the lower limits and drive conservatively while towing in a JK/JL

    Probably the best advice.

We used to tow a small trailer behind our Jeep Libertys, but they were rated for 3500 pounds and the trailer was well under that. I guess with the 2 door JL I will just not tow anything other than a small utility trailer, if that.
