My gear box has been sticky for several months. One mechanic told me it required a new master/slave cylinder replacement to fix it.

A different mechanic told me that the 'doghouse' rings inside the transmission are worn and that is the issue causing the problem. He mentioned that the transmission either needs to be rebuilt or that I need a new transmission.

I'm at a loss for what to do. Go to a third mechanic and get a third opinion? Deal with the issue? Hard to stomach paying $1,500-$3,000 for this.

Assume it’s manual. On mine, it’s the synchro that is going bad. Will probably buy a rebuild. AX15 is $1k. Look into a rebuild. And probably go to a transmission specialist.

Piratesailor, thank you for the reply and very sorry for such a late response. It’s bad ‘doghouse rings’ inside the tranny apparently. It’s definitely a rebuild or aftermarket/refurbished. They are quoting me $1,500 for the part and another $1k for the labor. They also suggested replacing the clutch while I’m in there. I love my Jeep, but I’m ready to scrap it as it’s just too expensive to fix. Especially with 182k miles. Hard to do, but open to help/suggestions. Indeed it’s a manual tranny.

I'm not familiar with the TJ floor, but on a JK you can pull the shift tower without removing the transmission. NV3550 transmission?
