Just driving and it died. felt like a simple alternator issue or something like that. Got it home replaced the alternator and it started right up. Got half a block away from the house and it did the same thing. it still cranks but won’t start. Here are all the things I’ve checked and replaced. Even had the alternator checked again.

    Capacitors on ECM

    Ignition distributor pickup

    Crank sensor

    Alternator

    Ignition switch

    Ignition coil

Distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and spark plug cables.
    Getting spark.

    Fuel pressure regulator

Checked fuel pressure it’s at 39psi

    MAP sensor

I’m just wondering if after the replacement of the ECM capacitors if it’s something else wrong with the computer that that didn’t fix. The check engine light turns on when I put the key in and goes off when I turn the key. I have read that’s a sign your computer is good. I do t get any trouble codes other than 12 Memory Standby power lost (Battery or computer recently disconnected), 33 Air conditioning clutch relay circuit open (I don’t have AC) and 55 which is end of codes.
Open to any thoughts or suggestions on what I can run down next. I’ve checked wiring pretty thoroughly but still feel like it’s some type of electrical issue. all the fuses and relays have been checked as well. Really thinking it’s the computer still. If anyone has a good lead on one that not 600$ that would be nice too lol but ultimately may have to drop the coin on one.
Thank you in advance for the help!

yes all those look good. It looks like somehow the timing has skipped. I'm going to re time it tonight. I don't thing the timing chain is broken or anything. There is nothing rattling around when it cranks and it just stalled out when it did die both times. The rotor is off from where where it should be when cylinder one is at top dead center. Its in-between the # 4 and 2 spark plugs not inline with #1. Not sure how that happened or why. I'll dig more into that tonight.

It’s getting fuel for sure plugs have gas on them and the file pressure is 39psi. If I relive the fuel pressure in the rail and cycle the key on it pressurized back up no problem.
I’m going to re position the distributor tonight and get the timing where it should be is that doesn’t work I’m thinking maybe timing chain is broken or something like that.

So we hooked up to the OB sensor which is located next to the ECM. I didn’t have one that connected and with no trouble codes flashing on the dash I wasn’t thinking it was the ECM. My buddy had one that connected but it wouldn’t link up to the ECM. I purchased a new ECM so we will see what happens with that.

Lol that’s for sure! One of the ground wires that was going to the exhaust manifold was barely hanging on I’m going to fix that today but I don’t think that’s it at all. All the other grounds look good but I’ll definitely keep this thread updated.
Definitely pissing me off! I have the 4.0 motor on the stand in my garage it’s very tempting just to start the swap for that!

May not may not apply but you never know… my Silverado, with a duramax 6.6 would run and start fine then die. Did this a number of times. Thought it was filters, pumps, etc etc. Turns out it was a bad fuel pick up in the tank. It was clogged with corrosion and as they truck moved the debris would float and clog the pickup.. instant stall. Just a thought…

I’m currently replacing my 1993 YJ’s fuel tank and all components.

Ok so the new computer came and still no start lol that’s my luck! I’m stumped but like piratesailor said maybe I should drop the tank and check the pump etc. The only problem there is the the plugs seem to be getting fuel, they are wet after cranking, we definitely have spark. The fuel pressure in the rail is 39psi we can relieve the pressure crank it over, the pump humms and fuel pressure goes right back to 39psi.
I also fixed the ground wire. There are two of them connected to the inttake manifold right there. I soldered the one to the other even sanded the crimp washers so all the connections would be good. I did remove a wire harness that was coiled up by the firewall at the back of the motor and it looks like that was a just for the Ac if I ever wanted it. It had a connector by the ECM and was easy to take out. There were a couple wires in there that had some casing missing and wire was bare. Either way that didn't seem to be the issue anyways.
I may end up just taking it in and let my mechanic figure it out lol.
When we do plug the diag computer into the OB connector it still won’t connect the computer. Seems odd I also looked at all the wiring that goes into the ECM. Nothing looked corroded or out of sorts there. I’m stumped for sure on this.

Boy tough one. I know you said you have a park but it seems that even with some spark it would turn over and sputter at least. Basically ignite the fuel. Maybe no compression? Curious if you tried starter fluid. Shooting in the dark.

Yes we have tried starter fluid. I’d does have compression checked that when we were looking into weather or not the timing was off. Timing is on and spark looks good I replaced all the spark plugs, gap is .35 I believe. Rotor lines up with spark plug 1 cylinder 1 on the compression stroke top dead center.

Reading on the YJ website.. a shot in the dark…. Someone seemed to have a similar problem and it was a fuse. In fact the fuse he replaced was for the overhead light but it had other functions tied into it. Strange but it fixed it for him.

I’ve gone through all the fuses and none are burned up or anything. Probably worth a double check on that. I’m feeling like it’s something stupid like that though. I’ll look that over again and hopefully I find something. Hell it may be worth replacing all the fuses and relays. Cheaper than the mechanic haha.

I feel for ya. Sometimes it’s something simple and stupid that is overlooked. Lord knows I’ve been there.

Curious if you found the cause/solution? Recently replaced my fuel tank, fuel pump and most of the components and I find it’s running better now.

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to this. I finally took it to the mechanic. They had it fixed in a jiffy lol. It turns out that the bushings in the distributor its self he said were worn out which cause the distributor to jump 180 degrees. I had to wait a couple weeks to take it in. I was trying a new mechanic and I will definitely go back to them. just my luck though that I’m thinking electrical especially with all the stuff I was reading and fixed. He even said it looks like you won’t have any problems for a while lol. It’s run great for the past week for sure! You can add this to the list of things to check out when you do have a crank no start condition. I asked him about it still sparking and he said it would and was still sparking when they looked at that. That’s why they are mechanics and I’m not I guess. Definitely a good learning experience for me though. Just hope this helps someone out.
