My faithful YJ of many years (2.5 liter), is finally ready for motor help. Though I have redone nearly everything on my YJ and TJ, I have never rebuilt a motor. Was planning to buy a rebuilt by ATK... then I started reading reviews on them, yikes man, not good. I'm "satisfied" sticking with the 2.5 for simplicity. Any suggestions on where to buy a fresh motor would be greatly appreciated.
...or, if anyone knows of a shop East of the Mississippi that specializes in motor swaps, that's what I would really like to have done. Either a 4.0 liter or go all the way with a V8!!

Maybe they have gotten better,(ATK) but I had really bad luck with them 6 years ago. They didn't supply the correct parts with their products and wouldn't honor their warranty

Rebuilding the 2.5 shouldn't be too bad, just call around and ask. Many machine shops will rebuild them for you if you strip all accessories leaving only block, head and oilpan and bring it to them after you have pulled it from the jeep.

If you want to go 4.0 You will need to find a tranny (AX15 manual, or 999 auto) that is meant for the 4.0. The AX5 is not compatible. If you are going to spend that kind of money, you might as well get the GM 260hp/330ft/lbs torque crate motor from summit for $1200; will need to get H2O pump, alternator, powersteering pump, and carb. distributor also. Motor mount adapters are $250 for bolt ins. The AX15 is easliy mated to it with adapter. If you want an automatic the TH350 bolts right to the 350motor, and if you look long enough you can find a TH350/np205 combo. This is the shortest tranny/tcase combo on the market and plenty strong for whatever you throw at it.

    Oh by the way Welcome.
