i have 84 cj7 with 6 cylinder engine. Alternator died so I went to local auto store and got a new one. It charges ok but battery runs down when jeep is turned off. I tested battery and it's fine. Somebody said the new alternators have a built in voltage regulator, I have voltage regulator on the fender well and that built in VR is causing the battery to run down, anybody had this problem before?

Welcome! If it runs down when its off, you might have a parasitic drain. Might want to see whats drawing power with the engine off.

I agree with Chris. You have something draining the battery when it is off. Not likely to be the alternator. Look at any aftermarket electronics like lights or amplifiers that you have tied into the battery.
