Possible Electrical Issue

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Limited addition. We got screwed over on. We bought it unknowing that it had been totalled. I jumped another vehicle with the jeep and I misread the cables and logo on the battery (brand new at the time). Since it has been not wanting to keep a charged since I jumped the car incorrectly I figured the battery was draining because of the alternator so we replaced that. So newer battery (less than year old) and brand new alternator. We have charged the battery and it stays charged for less then 24 hrs. Anyone have any ideas of what I could have done wrong and what I can do to fix it that in inexpensive? My dad without fully looking at is thinking it could be the starter. Also the driver side window is stuck in the down position and the buttons do not work just the drivers side though, cpuld that be an issue? Please I could use someone's help so I could either get it it back on the road for my family or to sell it. Can't afford to go to a shop.

 

Go the Auto parts store and pick up an Inductive Amp Meter (Should be around $10.00 give or take). (Inductive because you do not have to wire it to anything - you just set it on the PLUS / Red cable). While holding it over the positive cable, have someone start the car. The meter will go from Negative side (A huge drain when cranking the starter) to the other side of the meter if there is a charge coming from the charging system / alternator once the engine starts running. It is an instant solid test to tell you if the battery is receiving a charge from the alternator / charging system. If it is getting a charge and your newer battery still goes down in 24 hours, there is a live circuit or Drain on the battery even with the ignition turned off. Something is still on! Simple checks include DOME LIGHT, Trunk light, last thing you fixed...

 

Yes I'm with Jeep #5. It is always good to double check your previous work. With the Jeep running What does your volt meter say. It should be around 14volts. If so Your battery should be getting a charge, and the inductive Amp Meter will confirm that hopefully. If I read your post correctly. You purchased a new battery thinking it was bad, and when it was drained you tried to Jump it, but crossed the cables. I assume using that same battery that after you realized the cables were crossed that you did get it sorted out and was able to jump the Jeep. You then purchased an alternating thinking that this was the cause of you weak battery, and it still is not starting after 24 hours.

It is possible that you did damage the battery, but I doubt it because this issue was happening before you replaced the battery. Are there any aftermarket accessories on the Jeep i.e. Lights, stereo, amps, CB radio etc.? Do you have anything plugged into the any charging ports like Ipads, radar detecters, phones, or Ipods. All these things should be suspect when youre having issues with a battery drain. I would disconnect them all from the power source and see if that fixes your problem, If so hook them back up one at a time to see which one is shorted out.

For your window either the button (switch) is bad or the power window motor is bad. You can get a test light to test the switch, if I had to guess the switch is the most likely culprit. The bad news is unlike earlier cars you can't just replace the one switch. for you it is the whole panel of switches Part # 5HB61DX9AC and the cheapest place I know to get OEM Mopar parts is at http://www.wholesalemopar.com/parts_catalog.html where it is $148. The window motor is very difficult to change out. Its part # is 5096177AA and it is $122

You might try purchasing the switch panel on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/99-04-Jeep-...ash=item1a2a627d36:g:a64AAOSwXeJYCQw0&vxp=mtr This one is $28 I have purchased from DEADJEEP, the seller, and they sent me a bad part, but were quick to send me another no questions asked and told me to throw the bad one away. The issue here is you don't know how long that switch will last. If you plan on selling the Jeep, who cares?
