I just joined this page hoping to get some advice and recommendations on a few things. I would love to build up my jeep a bit, I have a 2 door black 2014 Wrangler Sport. Right now I'm hoping to get some bigger tires and new rims. Im going towards 35" tires with 17" wheels. Can anyone tell me if i need to absolutely change the spare tire carrier if i get bigger tires, and what to get if i do? Thanks!

Ideally you would want your spare tire to match the the rest.

I realize that, but I was wondering if i needed to change the carrier. I was told the original spare tire carrier would not be able to hold up the weight of a bigger tire, but I've seen some people get away with it. Also, the spare tire carriers I've found are really expensive and if i need to get one i want to make sure its a necessity

Welcome to the Forum rebmb. :jeepwave:

Funny, I was actually going to post some thing about spare tires.
But honestly, I'm not sure if the OE carrier can handle the added weight of a 35'spare. But what I can tell you. Is your going to have to get a spacer of some type to get the tire on the carrier. Also, your either going to have to relocate your 3rd brake light or get an extension for it to get it to clear the bigger tire. And, there's 2 rubber bumpers behind the tire. Your either going to have to cut them down, or buy smaller ones to keep the tire from bouncing around back there.
    Hope this helps a little.

In general moving up to 35s tends to reach or exceed the capacity of the stock spare mount. Problems begin when the heavier than stock spare tire flexes the thin sheet metal tail gate as the JK travels down the road or trail. Budget friendlier upgrades like the RR heavy duty hinge are an upgrade to stock hinges. I run the TF HD hinge with the OEM tire mount.

Is this what you did with your spare tire carrier? This helps a lot, thank you so much!

Did you need to change your rear bumper when using the TF HD hinge with the OEM tire mount? Thanks for your response, it really helped!

No new bumpers needed. The TeraFlex HD hinge is an easy upgrade. The one-piece aluminum design reinforces the two separate factory hinge attachment points on the body for more tire weight capacity taking more load off the tail gate as well as adding more utility. The biggest con is the price and the similar copy by RR is less expensive. I run the OEM tire mount as I promise LOML not to move up to 37s at least not yet.

I just want to make sure I get this correctly. So you have both the TF HD hinge and the OEM tire mount to hold up your spare tire? can i keep my original rear bumper by doing this? Sorry for all the questions! I was told that i needed to change everything including the rear bumper if I wanted to have 35" tires, which is very expensive. This really helps, thanks again!

I really like that TF HD hinge aggrex. Are there spacers to accommodate larger tires with the OE carrier? Almost $500. Only down side.

So rebmf. Are we helping or making it worse. Lol.

Considering i was told that i would need to drop about $1000 to change the spare tire carrier/rear bumper, i would say you guys are helping me a lot more!! $500 is a lot, but the reviews are great and seem to be totally worth it... and better than spending around $1000!

The TF HD hinge mounts in the stock location. The optional TF HD tire carrier has different stud holes to accommodate 33s>35s>37s moving the spare tire higher to clear most bumpers. Check out the TF videos to see how flexible the design can be. FYI: less expensive RR has similar adjustments

Was wondering what happened to you aggrex. It's getting late for you. Figured you went to bed.
I was taught to respect my elders. So i-LL leave it at that. Lol.

    Once again. Great recommendation.

Sorry misunderstood. You can run a 35" tire on the stock carrier but the carrier will eventually break. My dad ran a 35 for about 20k miles and maybe 15 off road trips. Tereflex and evo mfg and sever others make an hd hindge that doesn't break the bank vs a full bumper tire carrier setup.

I like the teraflex products, but if you are in the market for a new bumper you can find an integrated bumper tire carrier for under $600 and your options go up a lot if you are willing to pay $800. This will put all the weight on the frame and not the tailgate. One of my favorite places to look is 4x4groupbuy.com for bumpers. I picked up my Cj bumper/carrier from them for $400. JKs are of course more expensive.
