Wrangler X Tailgate

    Hi, I recently purchased this Wrangler and it came with an oversized spare w/bike rack mounted to the spare. The tire and rack are fine, but apparently the extra weight is causing the upper 6" of the tailgate to start bending/be tweaked away from where it joins the sheetmetal on the body, on the door latch side. Every time I hit rough road, the weight of the spare and rack are bouncing hard and rattling against the door latch. Anyone have any suggestions on a removable support or mod I can do to reinforce this area? Thanks in advance-

    Welcome! You have a few choices to make: 1) if the tailgate is only bent and not cracked it may not need replacement other than for aesthetics. But take that spare tire off before it damages the tailgate further or worse fall off and hurt someone. 2) if you replace the tailgate, buy HD hinges like TeraFlex or Rugged Ridge to support the heavy spare tire and accessories, 3) whether or not you decide to replace the tailgate consider a frame or bumper mounted spare tire carrier.

    Yeah...I see what you are saying now. You might want to consider a bumper with a separate mount, or swing away mount on it. I don't think they make any tailgate reinforcement hinges for your year. Someone else might have more information though.

    After checking into available aftermarket accessories online and considering the weight I agree, a bumper or frame mounted tire carrier would be the best way to go. Thanks for the input-
