Hey I have a 2000 cherokee, and last week the check gauges light came on and the battery gauge dropped all the way, it starts but as soon is its in gear this happens. I tightened all the battery cables, even had battery checked, and still has a new alternator as of january

Welcome! Not sure what would cause this, but hopefully someone will be able to help.

Wow. Another 2000 XJ that had the same issue mine had.
It seemed to only happen in cold weather though. The check gauges light would come on. The tach and speedo would both drop to zero. The first couple times it happened I panicked. I checked every thing I could think of. Battery cables, relays, fuses, and anything else that I ran across. But never found an issue.

So. When it happened. The check engine light never came on. The Jeep continued to run as if nothing happened. So, after the 3rd or 4th time it happened. I just ignored it. And honestly. I beleive it kept happening for 10 of the 14 years I owned the Jeep. Never had an issue with it starting and it always ran fine.

Just curious. Do you have an issue with your passenger side power window switch? I know of another guy that had that issue.

That's to funny Matty. That's 3 XJs I know have / had the same issue with the window switch. I never fixed that either. I just ran the window from the drivers side.

If you continue to search for the check gauge issue. I'd like to know what you find.

Dude. I had my XJ for 14 years. It didn't owe me a dime. I bought it with 36k on the odometer. Traded it in with over 199k. And still had more in her. Had a few things I needed to keep it going strong. A couple things went in the 190s range. Starter AC compressor, water pump. I hated trading her in. But, I wanted my JK for years. So I made the sacrifice. Lol. Here's a pic.20170317_194720.jpg
Lost the nerf bars after a year or so. Didn't really like them.
Anyway. If the check gauge issue continues, I really wouldn't worry about it unless you notice a severe change in it performance.

If you ever figure out what the issue is. Not that I can help my XJ at this point. But I would like to know what causes this gauge issue. Thanks Matty.

Awesome work Matty. If anyone else has the same issue. I'm sure you'll be able to help them more than I can.

Again.....Welcome. Hope you hang around. It's an awesome forum.
