Welcome one to the site! The 4.0 was an inline 6 cylinder engine. The V8 came in a 5.2, 5.9 but I'm not sure off the top of my head when those were introduced.

There was never a 4.7 I6 offerred. People build a 4.7L Stroker motor out of a 4.0. The 4.0 is the largest motor offerred for the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1983-2001). I don't believe a tranny bolted to a 4cyl will bolt up to a 6cyl. Usually people replace both at the same time.

Even if the 4.0 bolts to the 4 cylinder trans, the transmission probably wouldn't survive all that long. They aren't regarded as being strong transmissions.
