I was very dead set on purchasing a 1999 TJ 4cyl manual with 165k miles. No body or frame rust, very good shape, priced what I want to pay but I checked the VIN and found out it's had 15 owners. The current owner said they haven't had any problems and neither did the owner before them, she seems pretty trustworthy but it still worried me about having 15 owners. What do you guys think?

Welcome! Fifteen owners is unusual but maybe you can think of it like buying a Hertz rental car with hundreds of different drivers. If the frame, motor, trans checkout and no records or visible signs of damage then maybe it's okay. TJs or any Wrangler could have been an impulsive purchase only to discover later that it wasn't a good fit for the owner. It's an 18+ year old vehicle so buyer beware of other unknown issues.

    Ellen, Welcome to the site.

I work with CarFax reports often and have seen it report new owners when the dealership takes the vehicle in on trade or when the owner updates the title such as when the lien has been satisfied or they add a spouse. 15 does seem like a lot but without looking at it, I can't judge the true nature of 15 owners. The mileage seems fair and equates to about 9166 miles a year or 763.83 miles a month, below the normal average of 1,000-1,500.

My thoughts on a jeep are they are not for everybody. I think many people buy a jeep and find out that it is not all fun and games and the Heat and Cold can be unbearable for them, and therefore they sell them soon after getting them. It is not like a family car or a work truck where the vehicle is an absolute necessity, and a keeper. Jeeping is a lifestyle and for those of us who embrace a lifestyle of the outdoors Jeeps are wonderful vehicles.

I kinda thought the same thing OFFGRID. How many people owned it for 6 months vs how many for 3 years. Yes, 15 owners in that amount of time would set off a couple red flags for me too. What's wrong with the Jeep that people selling it off. Not my problem any more...ya know. And it did cross my mine several times. Jeeps aren't for every one. And I do think some people look at a Jeep as a toy. And when they realize...it's not. It's a daily driver, and yes, a way of life. And they sell it because it wasn't what they thought.

And just an observation I had with the carfax with my JK. It only knows what's reported to carfax. It was reported that my JK had xxxx miles on it. And it turns out that reporting Dealership got it wrong. It actually had 300 miles less when I bought it. Carfax is not the Bible. Just an observation, and my case and point.
