When I bought my Jeep the previous owner had done the 20 inch upgrade..now if I want to change to 17 inch what effect would that have on my mileage and speedometer..

Generally stepping down to 17s will not affect the speedo if you select the overall same diameter tires as the stock tires. There are several websites that can compare overall diameter, section width, etc between different size wheels. Just make sure the 17s were available on your GC and whether they can clear the calipers and whatever. Check out this website: https://www.discounttiredirect.com/learn/tire-size-calculator

The 265/50R20 is approx 30.4" tall. For example a similar size 17" tire 245/70R17 is approx 30.5" tall and will have approx 1.5" more sidewall hgt. More sidewall height is better for impacts from off-road excursions.

Can't help you with a 20" tire as they're not in my build plans for any of my vehicles and larger size 20s gets more spendy quick and less cost effective. Check out the website I posted.
