    lift kit, winch, lighting
    I have a 2000 xj 4.0
For the last month this issue has popped up (only 3 times)
I would start it up. Would run for about 10 seconds and die. Would restart it and would run fine
No rhyme or reason for it
The other day I took it out and it purred. Stopped to do banking, came out, attempted to start it and no luck.
Turns over fine, it’s like someone just pulled coil wire
Checked all fuses, fine. Took off air filter tube and tried ether
    No change
    Just no spark
    Any ideas would help
    Thanks

    welcome hope we can help-

you claim no spark - how did you determine no spark?
Did you check for codes? Ideally a scanner but key on off is better than nothing...
Did you check the fuses OR look at them?

you had a helper - they turned key and you sprayed ether into TB?

Welcome! You came to the right place for some internet diagnosis. Intermittent issues are challenging but can also be a good sign.

    Welcome from Oklahoma.
The Crank Position Sensor (CPS) is a common failure which would cause a no spark issue.
If it was an earlier XJ I would also suspect an ignition coil failure since it would have one, however an 00-01 XJ has a coil rail with 3 coils so I would expect it to at least run poorly or make some half hearted attempt to run.

The CPS is mounted on the driver's side of the transmission bell housing up near the back of the engine. The plug is towards the rear of the engine by the intake, you should be able to access the electrical plug from under the hood. The CPS it taken out from underneath with a combination of extensions and a swivel joint. A trick to make it easier next time is to cut the holes in the new CPS to make them slots so you only have to loosen the bolts next time rather than take them completely out. This may void the new CPS warranty though.

Test procedure for CPS (originally posted by BlueXJ on other forums):
    TESTING PROCEDURE 1991 – 2001 4.0L H.O. engines
    1. Near the rear of intake manifold, disconnect sensor pigtail harness connector from main wiring harness.
    2. Place an ohmmeter across terminals B and C (SEE Image). Ohmmeter should be set to 1K-to-1OK scale for this test.
    3. The meter reading should be open (infinite resistance). Replace sensor if a low resistance is indicated.
