I have a 1990 jeep xj 4.0 4speed automatic and want to do a 4x4 swap. I have a good mechanical background and feel capable of doing a conversion. My question is... What year donor vehical will i need? I heard i would need a 1988-1992... Is that true? Or can i use a different year.

You could probably just swap any sensors over but if you are worried you could stay with similar era parts.
The axle can be from any year, but one from 96-99 would be best as the 91ish and prior XJs had a vacuum operated front axle disconnect that wasn't great.
My 97 (OBD2) XJ had a 96 (OBD1) engine in it. I pulled that engine and put it in my 93 (OBD1).
I also have axles from a 99 XJ under my 93.
Unfortunately I am not as versed on the Renix era XJs.
