    Hey Folks

    I would like to convert my Wife's rear Drum brakes to Disc. Any advice how to get started, and all that's involved?

    It's a 1998 Wrangler that I had lifted, painted and overall restored. It was her Dad's who passed away, so she is very attached. It looks great, but I would like to covert rear brakes to disc.

    It could be a Dana 44 (rare in a TJ/ only came with Towing package), but most likely it is a 35. If it is a Dana 35, IMO the best thing to do would be to find you a ford 8.8 (usually from a ford explorer) that has rear disk brakes on it already. You are then getting a much stronger axle and disk brakes for very similar cost to ordering a disk brake kit. The only thing you have to do to the axle is move the spring perches in. What ever you do whether a kit or an axle you will have to change the master cylinder (MC) out to a disk front/rear MC. The disk/drum MC does not move enough fluid to activate the rear disk brakes. When you order disk brake kits they don't tell you this, and they don't usually come with a MC. I bet you could find a newer TJ like a 2006 in a junkyard and pull the rear brake assemblies off including brake hoses, MC, and mounting brackets, and retrofit it to your jeep. Sounds like you're in for a little research and fun.

    Where do you live? 4wheelparts are popping up like fire ants. Also why the upgrade to rear disk? Are you having trouble stopping after big tire upgrade?

    I live in San Diego. There are several locations here. They did the lift and tires/rims. It stops ok, but my Wife is use to driving my new Stingray. Lol. I suspect with the disc conversion it would stop better...

    The rear brakes only do about 25% of the stopping, and the difference between drum and disk in the rear is minimal. Where you really notice the difference is in a sports car where speed, stop, speed, stop come in. The drum brakes take longer to cool off and thereby get brake fade before disk brakes. If you are looking for more stopping power you would be better off going with a big brake kit in the front, but you could do both. Wilwood makes a big brake kit for front and back that sells for about $1k each, but you have to get YJ spindles in the front (not a big deal) and have a minimum of 16" wheels to clear the larger brakes to make them work. Depending on you wheel size, it might be a bigger investment than it's worth.

    Lucky you! I hear San Diego is beaux all the time. I have a friend who went there for vacation after college and never came home. We talk about the move, but nothing ever comes of it.

    I spent 30 years in the Navy here in San Diego. I retired in 2013 and stayed. It's very expensive to live here, but the weather is always nice. I'm originally from Ohio, but joined the Navy in 1983. Life is good:)

    My wife's family is from Canton and Chardon. I've visited up there. It is even cold in the summer time but it is pretty; you made a good move.

    I was from the Dayton area. I'm thankful I am able to afford to live here. It's usually 72° in most seasons, but gets hot in the summer. The humidity is low here so it's good.
