I know asking about oil preferences is like asking about political or religious preferences, but I'm going to tempt fate by asking.

What is the preferable oil to run in a 208k miles 2003 TJ 4 liter engine? I don't know what the prior owner ran, but it may be too late in its life to switch to synthetic but what weight for Texas summers and winters is suggested?

Up north I've used 5W30 synthetic year round with no issues on various engines. High mileage 4.0 with possible RMS leak and high Tex temps could use 10W30 following jeep specs. Son's '97 Avalon @171k started 5W30 synthetic @95k with no issues or leaks. IMO start with dino oil for the first OCI and observe whether you have any oil consumption or oil leaks or any misc engine issues as the project begins.

that sounds like sound advice. All fluids will be topped off tomorrow. Once the valve cover and gasket shows up, then a full oil change will be in order.

Didn't you already say it was marking its territory? Usually, if there are no leaks synthetic will not cause one and will give you extra protection because it is slicker. If there is a leak it will likely make it worse. I have a suggestion that will likely cause indigestion for some and if so that is fine. As you said about politics and religion.

You change your oil about what, every 4 - 5k miles? I going to tell you how to add another 1k  and protect it better. Say you go to 6k between oil changes with whatever oil you choose for your locale. Every 3k change the filter, that's where the dirt is. ;) In other words, change the filter every 3k and the oil every 6k. OK guys, lets have it. :smack:

I run either Valveline 10w30 high mileage (synthetic blend) or Rotella T 10w40, supposedly it has more ZDDP (Zinc) than other oils which is better for the flat tappet engine. If I run the 10w40 it is in the summer only.

3 inch zone lift. Fox 2.0 shocks. 35 inch nitto ridge grapplers. Bushwacker flat fenders. No name steel bumpers front and back for now.
I see no problems using full synthetic oil in higher mileage motors. They do make a high mileage synthetic for older wore in motors as well. I'd imagine a 5w30 would be just fine for Texas temperatures

That actually sounds reasonable to me. My goal (if possible) is to avoid having to replace or rebuild the engine for a while. The debate in my head is synthetic or dino after I change out the valve cover gasket and do a general clean up. I'm headed out to the driveway today to contort myself under the Jeep to see if I can trace the leak.

I ran Mobile 1 full synthetic for years and was happy with it. With the new engine Comp Cams told me to run Valvoline 10w-30 racing oil with zinc. I'm not sure what I'll run after the break in is over but I will stay with zinc for this cam.

When I bought my JK, manufactured for 5 - 20. So I stuck with that, but full synthetic. I ran 10 - 30 full syn in my XJ for 13 years. And never an issue. Yup...maned for 10 - 30

I have never been picky about oils. I follow the recommendation of the car manufacturer for viscosity, and feel it is important to try not to change brands too often. A couple of years ago I found a company that distributes 5 gallon to 100 gallon barrels and I purchase their 5 gallon barrel of synthetic blend in the viscosities that I need. I have 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, and gear oil. They run about $45 a barrel.
