Hi guys new here and new to working on these jeeps . I have been twisting wrenches since i was a kid but have never done anything like a head gasket before . I recently replaced the cracked head on my 99 4.0 . Reinstalling the new head from clearwater last night . Like a dope i put the first bolt in #11 slot with never seeze on it finger tight . I had it all clean with the head off. Fearing the liquid thread sealant wouldn't work with the now never seezed hole i used Teflon tape as some suggested . I also noticed afterward that my torque wrench was set at 120 instead of 110 for 13 of the 14 bolts . I was freezing and rushing through the process i suppose . #11 is deff torqued to 100 like specs say . I'm reading that the Teflon tape was a no no . Should i pull all the bolts and put new gasket , retorque to 110 with the same new bolts i just put in or leave it as it is and run it . Thanks in advance . Joe from NJ

I think I'm just going to pull #11 throw some liquid thread sealant on it and reinstall .. after asking a guy at work who has far more experience then i, he said i should be fine at 120. I'm hoping anyhow. I'm afraid if i loosen one at a time and retorque it to a lower value ill waste the gasket that is already compressed to the higher value

Welcome to the forum XjJoeXj. Jersey here too. Cold....yeah. 12° sucks. 24 today feels like a sauna. Lolll.

Never replaced a head on a Mopar motor. Did several on chevys. As @2oldjeeps stated. Most torque wrenches are off to some degree. And, you should be fine over torquing by 10#. Not recommended. But it should be fine. You are correct. If you retorque at a lower #. You may up up haveing issues. Never use Teflon tape. Your resistance will be off, as well as your torque #. Use tape on plumping. Thermostat housing and such where torque # isn't so critical.

We have some very knowledgeable members here that I'm sure will be able to add more in put. Stay warm dude.

You should be good. re torque that #11 with never seize. You can also use petroleum jelly. Both will do the same thing.

Excellent guys . Thanks for the replies. I took #11 out and retorqed it with the loctite 592 ( i think it was ) high temp thread sealer . I can be a little ocd at times lol . I love the jeep & don't want to screw it up . I was going to finish her up this evening but was busy plowing today with this "cyclone bomb" or whatever the news labeled it .. seemed like a normal old snow storm to me :rain:. Anyway thanks a million guys for putting my mind at ease . . I'm sure ill be back sooner or later with some more questions

Great start for that Jeep. I had a 2000 for years. 2"lift with 31s.
