Motor Ticking

    wheels, tires, exhaust
    I have a 2000 TJ. motor ticks constantly but have been told it is not the motor its self. motor runs fine but has that constant tick especially when it is cold like in the mornings. sometimes the longer it runs or is driven the ticking gets more quiet

    Welcome to jeeps.net! Try some synthetic oil since they flow better in low temperatures. Constant ticking due to mileage or wear may not have dramatic improvement.

    Cracked exhaust manifold will tick too.
    The 4.0 exhaust manifolds all crack.

    Be sure you're using 10w30 motor oil and a quality oil filter, like the Mopar oil filter. The 4.0 takes 6 quarts of oil no more no less. If there is more or less than 6 quarts the motor can tick. Exhaust manifold crack is a real thing and will happen to 90% of all 4.0 motors. Be sure the rocker bridge capscrews are tight to spec

    It's also possible you have a broken piston skirt. That will be a louder ticking almost a quiet knocking sound.

    98 lifted, 00 stock 99wj just beautiful
    my 2000 has a "clatter" that quiets a little when warm. did it 16 months ago when i bought it at 168000. still same now at 176000, 8000 miles. some say piston slap,?? runs great,smooth, gutsie!!
    oh, using 15/40 t4 rotella,makes no difference what oil.

    If its lifters its more of a ticking sound. If its piston slap its because the piston skirts are worn, cylinder worn etc, and sounds like a metallic sound (dull knock or tapping ) and is more noticeable when first started and may then go away or less noticeable after its warmed up. You do have a few miles on the engine so wear would be expected. Good luck
