There are many factors. Your owners manual should be your starting point. This should give you maximum towing weight, allowable tongue weight and gross vehicle weight. You'll also need the GRVW of the trailer (dry weight of the teiler plus its contents). Once the trailer is loaded, you'll need to know the actual tongue weight, and if this exceeds the jeeps allowable togue weight. You'll also have to know the loaded weight of the trailer and the weight of the jeep' s contents (people, dogs, bikes, food, etc). This may sound daunting, but once you have the information for both the traler and the jeep, it's fairly simple. There are LOTS of YouTube videos on the topic.

Thank you for this- I have been doing my research all weekend- a lot of the newer 4D have GVWR up to 6000, as does most of the Grand Cherokees, and of course pickups, too. Going to look at some trailers- I've seen a lot being pulled by 4Ds.

The "small" trailer is key for successful towing with a TJ/JK. Stability on the road, braking and cooling are important while staying within the allowable limits.

    paid cash for it.
Wheelbase is a key parameter for stability that is mostly neglected in owners manuals. A 2 door jk won’t tow much safely. That’s the bottom line. All the added air bags, spring helpers, heavy duty shocks, transmission coolers, heavy duty rads and load range e tires won’t change its short, inherently unstable, wheel base. A gladiator is a better vehicle for this reason alone. So is any 4 door pick up.

Funny you should mention a gladiator...I decided to upgrade and mine will be here in 6-8 weeks. I truly love my TJ, but I need something to tow safely with. So...Big Red is for sale... spread the word!
