Can anyone tell me why I have to smack my dash to get some of my gauges to turn on?

Loose connected on the back of the cluster, Jeep released an updated plug specifically for this issue.
You can take the cluster out, inspect the plug, maybe try to clean the pins a bit and reinstall making sure the connector is as secure as you can get it.

Its just the gas gauge and the battery gauge but If I hit the dash they both turn on. Where can I find this new plug?

Dealer only most likely... if they even still carry them or can get them.
I would take the cluster out first and give it a good look and re-seat the plug first. Worked on my 97 or 00 XJ.

Ongoing smacking of dash could cause other issues. Follow above procedure, perhaps clean and use some dielectric grease to ensure good connection.
