As you all know, the 99 TJ comes with a shift light telling you when to shift to the next gear for optimal fuel mileage on a straight drive. When I put the transmission back in after installing the new engine there was a wire leading to the transmission that I could not find a matching plug in for.

Now, soon after shifting to 5th gear the light comes on for me to shift to 6th. I don't have a 6th! It's obvious what the wire is for, but where does it plug in? Any help is greatly appreciated.

what color is wire? 1 or 2 wires in connector?
Some location, trans left side, front rear right side? any clue will help.
where does it exit from harness?

Pull the shift light bulb. If it's like my XJ it comes on about 2,000 rpm. You can either do it by sound/feel or watch the tach, no need for a light to tell you when to shift.

Two wires, I believe red and orange, but possibly red and yellow. Fairly short and comes out about midway in the harness. Cylinder shape with a flat end and a little metal hook. Pics:

I found out that wire is supposed to be like that, just attached to the harness. I took every transmission wire connector apart and sprayed them with electronics cleaner. I'll let you know if it works.

All you have to do is -
here is a little wiring info,
Did you scan for codes and see if a sensor is not reporting - maybe a code.
    Your reverse lights work?

there will be a test on the attachment :jeepwave:

No codes, reverse is fine. I unplugged and sprayed all of the transmission wiring connections with electronics cleaner. That cleared up the problem about 90% of the time. I would rather not go through that stretching routine again. How can I access the bulb for the shift light to unplug it? I do not need it at all.

Some jeepers have had success with bulb removal, replacing with a bad bulb or covering the bulb. The TJ electronics are not as integrated as today's vehicles so bulb removal should work seamlessly. Can't hurt to at least try......

    thinking was from experiance,

Possible the PIA emissions may someday require it, WHY if it ain;t broke, After seeng all the BS issues as it became 'cool'* to switch to LED's, Yeah I took that out now redo effort to install.

I place a HIGH value on stock!! when the jeep is old who wants to guess WHAT was reasoning..
There is enough butchering done to wranglers without adding to it....
The light is there for a reason!

    * as in RuPaul cool.

I damn sure saved it on my desk top. I'm having a little trouble wrapping my brain around some of it but I'm working on it. Thank you. What would be the unintended consequences of removing the bulb? With the new crankshaft, cam and engine balance my power curve has changed drastically. A 4.88 ring and pinion change the optimal shift points for mileage also, do they not?
