Anyone know what this is?

steering wheel makes a slight knocking noise when I turn left. This is what I saw and I'm not sure what it is. I have no idea what I'm doing, thanks!

 

The short flattish bar is your pitman arm. The long round bar coming off the pitman arm is your draglink. The piece that attaches the draglink to the pitman arm is called a tierod end. The boot is broken and should be replace, probably replace the tie rod end while you are there.

 

First though you should set the front axle up on jack stands and turn the steering back an forth and see what is making the noise, if no noise it may need the weight of the jeep on the tires to duplicate the noise? Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your jeep. These are invaluable especially for newbies. In order for you to do steering repairs you will need some special tools that are inexpensive such as a tie rod end puller kit $30+\-, and a torque wrench $60+\-. All of your bolts in the steering and suspension must be torqued to a specific tension. If you have never worked on a vehicle you may want to find a friend with car knowledge to help until your familiar and comfortable with doing it yourself. Everyone has a learning curve this is one of the benefits to being a member in a 4x4/jeep club. You make friends with people of like hobbies and minds.
