1989 YJ No spark cranking

    I have a 4.2 in my jeep and it just stopped starting the other day I have power to the positive side of my coil when the key is turned to run but as soon as I try to crank it over there is no power to the coil not too sure where to go with this kind of leaning towards ignition control module but any insight would be appreciated

    If your ignition module is going bad they do get hot to the touch when the engine is running, even begin to ooze out gooey stuff. Another symptom would be an ignition miss which gets worse as the engine warms up. Although I have heard of them quit running due to a bad module. Those slip on coil connectors can corrode or wear out causing a bad connection. Another thing that can go bad with these symptoms is the pick up coil in the distributor. It is wired to the purple and orange wires coming out of the distributor. There should be a reading of 600-800 ohms between those two. If you ever replace the module get the one from N.A.P.A. that is made by Echlin which is a bit on the expensive side. The cheaper ones can be bad right out of the box. You can convert to a larger distributor cap to help against spark arcing by doing the "Team Rush" upgrade which is found by looking it up on the www. This is basically adding a larger distributor cap with brass contacts and a taller rotor, a spark plug wire change is required also.

    so turns out I had a spare distributor so I tried that first and then came up with the same issue so I decided to bite the bullet and buy the Ignition control module swapped it out and it started first crank so it clearly just died in between starts didnt have any issues with it idling poorly or any of the common signs it just was dead 146$ later and its running
