My brothers 99 grand cherokee has rear drums. We were wondering if you can convert them to disc without changing the whole rear end?

Why are you wanting to switch?

Why not? Drum brakes are a pain in the ass

Well, they last along time, and have plenty of stopping power. Not familiar with jeeps, but I know with Tacomas, you loose stopping performance when you change the rear drum brakes to disk.

IME drum brake maintenance gets easier each time it's needed. I expect some improvement in overall brake performance for all your expense and time to convert over to disc brakes. Check to see if a drum-to-disc conversion kit is available. In some applications the master cylinder needs replacement. Swapping the rear axle might be another way.

There is an issue with the set up then. Disk should always out perform drum. #1 culprit with this is that those that do the conversion do not change the master cylinder to a disk/disk MC. A disk/drum MC just does not have the force to squeeze the newly converted rear disk essentially making the front brakes do all of the work acting like you have no rear brakes.

From what I have found the bolt spacing for the backing plates is different on the WJ than the ZJ/KJ that are normally the go to vehicles for rear disk swaps.

May be stuck with looking for a WJ with rear disk to swap on. JK rear disk may work? I don't know...... easier to find WJ parts to swap than JK though.
