Have a 95 YJ with 2.5L, and a 30RH (aka904) trans. I burned up the original and bought a used one from a yard. (Wanted 2 rebuilt and ready as i just do mud and rocks) the bought one was from a 2.5, TJ (was told) and also told it was the same trans.

After having it rebuilt i removed the original and found that the transfercase would not bolt up, one of the 6 holes bored in the transmission was a smaller diameter that the other 5 (at the 2 o'clock position) i drilled it out bigger and was now able to bolt the two together. However the transfer case would stop about 1/4" away from the rear of the transmission. Something is keeping a perfect seat of the two units. Any ideas? Does anyone know EXACTLY whats going on? Thanks for the help.

Yes the original is being rebuilt as we spaek, but i want to use them both as needed, without delay.

I had to delete my original answer as I apparently could not read correctly...sorry.

Remember that the NP231 came in a number of versions with some having 21, 23 and 27 splines for the input shaft and 26, 27 and 32 spline outputs.

I suspect you got other than the 23 spline input, 27 spline rear output you should require for a 95 Wrangler. Check your input shaft....

I removed the used transmission and tried it on the shop floor. It still would not tighten up more than 1/4" so, i had the original trans rebuilt and put into the jeep.

I am still scratching my head about that issue!?

So we had no usable help for you on this one. However, I am glad you got her up and running again. Wheel Safe!

So, as it turns out, the convertor was not fully seated and the oil pump was damaged. What a pain to get it tripple set, the oil pump is the last and hardest to get set. Picture included. I have a replacement pump and just need to get the convertor installed properly, Anyway this weekend, i hope to have it fully installed and driving!

Good luck! Not to hijack this thread but I made a post about swapping from manual to automatic transmission. The shop that has the auto transmission offer to do swap for 800 with parts. Then the came back and said it takes a wiring harness so its 1400.
Does your transmission have a wiring harness? Thanks
