I have a 2016 Wrangler 75th Anniversary edition, two door hardtop, Sahara, V6, 37000 miles. Long story short Cylinder #2 MISFIRE code came up and after trying several things it ended up at the dealership. Diagnosis was "valve seat overheat. Head needs to be replaced and thermostat is sticking". Over temp light has never come on. I don't have to tell you what that costs. I told them to go ahead but after reading some and being concerned with the sand in the cooling system issues of the past I told them to reverse flush they cooling system. Today the rep became involved. They told me no sign of sand. I said ok them check the temp sensor because the light has never come on so it must have gone bad. They said they doubted it was bad. I may have been born at night but it wasn't last night. If sand wasn't the problem and the sensor is good and I assume they checked for a blown head gasket then WTFO. So I tell them I want the old head. Call me curious. They said since it isn't warranty then its yours. On a subsequent call I'm told no no no you have to pay $150 disposal fee. Well now my spidey senses are tingling.

From what I have read in various posts and forums Cylinder #2 misfire is not uncommon but in my opinion too common. Can someone give me a definitive answer as to what the cause is for the " valve seats to overheat". For what I paid to have this work done I'm beginning to get the feeling that when I go pick it up there is not going to be a cause they can point to. BTW I'm paying the $150 to get the head back. I want to see the look on their faces because something stinks.

Could be right. I don’t know what shop you took your vehicle to to have it worked on.
The issues I see I don’t know what the code was set. to tell them that it was number two misfire. I probably would’ve put a time and light on there just to check and make sure that the ignition pole was shooting through the wires and watch the timing light itself on how many times it does misfire or is it random or what.
Another test it could’ve been done whatever if I thought it was a valve spring or valve seat problem that means that summer should’ve been leaking compression tester on there and tested each cylinder and see what the numbers are if that cylinder red low then yeah you do have a head problem.
And I’m not sure without seeing it myself. It’s a shame that you take these vehicle to these places to get stuff worked on and it’s hard to find a real good mechanic nowadays.
But I’m like you you should get the old head back and take a good look at yourself.

that cylinder 2 head issue is a known nightmare on the pentastar v6 and the fact they are trying to charge you a disposal fee for your own part is super shady because they probably just want to keep the core and sell it themselves

if the temp light never came on then a sticking thermostat wouldn't just cook one valve seat so they are likely just guessing to justify the bill while you have it home i would check the head for any casting defects since that was a huge problem in those years

once you get the jeep back and it is sitting in the driveway you might want to use a quality cover to avoid fading and cracking on that 75th anniversary trim especially since it only has 37k miles and deserves to stay clean after all that drama
