Only stays running if I keep my foot on the gas

    Hi I have an 85 CJ7 that is not firing on all cylinders. I replaced the distributor cap and the rotor and it fired up but only stayed running if I kept my foot on the gas. I am consented I do t have my wires hooked to the distributor cap correctly and have tried finding a diagram. Past that after replacing those parts where do I go next.
    Separate issue on my carburetor I have several hoses that are not hooked up the previous owner just put bolts in the end of them and I can’t find the appropriate schematics to see where the heck they go.
    I am a new Jeep owner and I will humbly say a beginner mechanic. Any guidance or information is much appreciated.

    Lots of mods, but they were already in place. MY mods are REPAIRS!
    Do you have access to a compression tester? You might have an internal issue. Here's to hoping not...

    Since another member suggested you do a compression test. And you need to pull the plugs.
    I'd suggest you look closely at the plugs. They can be a very good indicator of certain issues. Ignition, Air/fuel etc. You mentioned replacing cap etc.Whens the last time you replaced the wires....coil? Tubes from the carb are most likely vacuum tubes for emissions. Then again in '85. What emissions. Lol. And if you do a compression test. Don't put any plugs back in to test.
    Unfortunately, I have no idea of your experience level other than being a beginner. And of coarse I don't mean to point out the obvious. But I take it you have a misfire. There's several issues that would cause that. Overheating, ignition, A&R...

    It's hard to diagnose issues without actually being there. Nah mean....

    This may just be a vacuum leak, especially with a bunch of disconnected/"plugged" hoses. I would start checking it by spraying (CAREFULLY) carb cleaner or starting fluid on any suspect areas. If the engine speeds up, you have found the leak. This is absolutely best done outside and personally, I would have a fire extinguisher at the ready.
