2009 jeep compass has knocking sound that: after start up you bring rpm up to 1200 and the knocking starts for a few min. then it goes away. Then you have to wait until the next day so it will do it again. I am thinking cam phaser. Has anyone seen this before?

My 2009 Chevy truck does this now at 115000 miles. Sounds like lifters to me Its almost like it now has to pump oil up to the lifters to get them quiet. If it is a hard knocking sound and not a soft tap tap tap, it could be detonation. Try running a high octane fuel for a couple of tanks and see if it goes away. Also check your spark plugs and make sure that they are dry.

What I found was the cam phaser. I changed the oil and drove it for about 50 miles and changed it again using a synthetic and adding a BG product called MOA or motor oil additive cleared it up. No more knock. Might come back if oil isn't changed on time.

Thanks for that. My truck also has a VVT. I'll try that and see if it quiets it.
