99 Tj is an automatic. When coming to stop and putting it in park a crazy loud grinding noise comes. If I turn the jeep off it stops. Only happens when putting in or taking out of park. Tranny is strong. Shifts well. 4wd low and high works. Mechanic found nothing as it's only occasional

Hard to say. Are you at a complete stop when you are putting it in Gear? If not it will make a grinding noise. Are you parked on a hill when this happens? Possibly the shift linkage needs adjusted.
