Last year I was driving when it suddenly started making a grinding squeal. My husband replaced the serpentine belt and the squeal went away, but still has a grinding noise from that area. I didn't have money then to fix so it's been sitting for the past year. We've started it periodically to try to troubleshoot it but can't figure out exactly where the grind is from. Also, battery isn't keeping a charge.

I’m not familiar with the Compass motor but the problem could be the alternator bearings or serpentine belt tensioner. Drive over and get the alternator tested at local Advance/Autozone.
