i have a small head gasket leak near exhaust manifold. No oil in coolant. Losing only a very small amount. Dealer wants to replace engine. Says parts are obsolete or on back order. Any suggestions?

this is a 2004 SO cost to repair vs vehicle resale price is important,
How do you know the head gasket is leaking - all you said was small amount - WHAT WHERE WHEN ?

I strongly suggest a second opinion... A head gasket would be far less than a engine.

FYI: suggesting A new engine has me thinking the dealer does NOT want the job.

That is what I think. I live in a rural area. Two dealers within 70 miles. Other dealer I don’t trust to do a good job. Other shops tell me they don’t have the tool needed to deal with the overhead cam. I may have to go to Denver. Thank you for your response.

Welcome aboard! See if you have any local auto repair shops near you. Check their ratings, and get another opinion from one of them.

The leak is near exhaust. It blows white smoke after sitting a few days, then quits. I add about a 1/4 cup of water a week. Hasn’t overheated.
