I just acquired a 1972 CJ5 with the 304 V8 and will be surfing here for pics and info.
Is this a good machine for mud ... it has the standard.
The guy I got it from said the springs have been flipped, and it has pretty big mud grips now ... been sitting for 15 - 20 years and all four are rotten and flat .... how big of a tire can I put on a Jeep like this?

Welcome @ACAMS ...imo you got the torque to turn bigger wheels but the upper limit will be those axles.

A friend had one like it years ago and his grandson broke an axle .... I thought it was because the boy could tear up an anvil with a sponge .....
I just went and looked, and it has Q78-15 tires on it (Yep, they are old) google says they are 36" .... I have decided to make it street legal since I got a title and will go with 37", or maybe 39" .....

    Are the axles weak?
Can I get a stronger aftermarket axle?
Will it cause something else to break?
I am in my 60's and don't plan to get in anything but maybe deep mud.

It needs seats, EVERYTHING!!!! .... can I still buy stuff like that? .... It needs tail lights, but the park lights look fine.

check out the thread “my $120 CJ build”. The active build is going very well and could provide inspiration and tips. Generally if the frame rust is not bad the rest of the CJ is replaceable. Bottom line is you have to make the call to commit the time and work to make it your Jeep.

Many parts are still available aftermarket.

Covid must really be affecting Quadratec at the moment as I have seen many people cancel orders to due a long delay in shipping, but if nothing else it at least gives you an idea of what's out there and maybe you can find it through someone else and get it in a reasonable time.
