Mechanical fuel pump issue

    I have a 86 CJ7. 4.2. . This thing is going through fuel pumps like crazy fast. I have bought out all the fuel pumps at all the parts stores I'm my area and this issue has got me stumped. I have put on a fuel pump regulator and gauge so with that I'm guessing it's working at least the gauge shows it is. I literally put 5 miles on the pump I installed last night. I don't know any input is appreciated thanx.

    Lots of mods, but they were already in place. MY mods are REPAIRS!
    That might signal that the pump lever is being pushed too far for whatever reason. In the old small block Chevy world for example, it wasn't unheard of the have the rod between the cam and the fuel pump to be the wrong length, overdriving the pump and destroying it. Any chance it could be for another model?

    You can try an electric fuel pump conversion.

    Thanx for the info I ended up changing it over to electric fuel pump. I just couldn't keep dealing with that. But I definitely still want to figure out why it's the craziest thing. It just didn't make sense. But again thanx for the info

    I believe @rick1956 was spot on that the root cause is with the fuel pump rod. For many years before Mopar bought Jeep, they used to source parts from several manufacturers within the same model/year. If the rod length and pump don't match, bad things will happen. It would be interesting to see the wear condition of the pump rod.
