Has anyone replaced the stock transfer case in a 98 TJ with a GM NP205? And if so, what kind of fabrication had to be done?

231 -> 205 seems to be a popular swap but I can't find any info on what you'd need to fabricate to make it work

The NP205 is a great Tcase. Novak adapter to mate it. New drive shafts. Make sure you get the NP205 that drops on the correct side: driver drop or passenger drop. I can't remember which side the TJ is on. I assume you will twin stick it so you will need new cable shifters. I would say run the numbers and see how much you think you are going to spend. I bet you will be pretty close to the cost of an Atlas. I have built 2 Tcases for my CJ I tricked out the Dana20 ($1200) and I also tricked out a NP208 ($1050). Both almost cost me as much as an atlas. I should have bought the Atlas. I will wheel the 208 until it craps out and by an Atlas next.

A friend is telling me that a 242 will bolt right in. Is that correct and is it a beefier unit?

I don't believe there is much difference. Is there something wrong with your 231? If so rebuild it. What is your goal? Is this mainly a daily driver? Is it mainly an off-road vehicle? Are you looking for better off-road performance? Answer me this and then you can better choose what you need.

Just repaired the 231 for now. It’s a daily driver that I like to take out and have fun with. And when I’m out having fun I don’t like having to baby it because I’m trying not to break something.

the 231 is a good tcase. if i were to replace it it would be with tj rubicon tcase. gets you a 4:1 low gear and it is a direct swap.

Looks like retail price on that Atlas is about $2500 with everything needed to put it in a TJ.

I am in the same boat with my rig 231 is still holding up well for right now though. You can even swap the chain and 6 gear planetary gear over from a Chevy 231 (If I remember that right) if you are concerned about just strength.

I am going to try and get the money together for an Atlas by spring.
